Kansas State basketball knocked off their in-state rival on Tuesday night with a 74-67 final in Manhattan. Now, the Wildcats control their own destiny when it comes to winning the Big 12 conference.

Kansas State basketball had their biggest non-tournament win in years on Tuesday night, downing the Kansas Jayhawks at Bramlage Coliseum and keeping Manhattan partying all night long.

With the win, K-State has to make sure they stay at the top of the conference. Right now, they’re alone at the top with a 7-2 conference record. They’ll surely tack on another few losses, especially considering they still have to play KU at Allen Fieldhouse, a place where K-State has historically struggled.

Still, it’s hard not to be excited about what the rest of this season could look like if you’re a Kansas State hoops fan.

More from Kansas State Wildcats

The last time the Wildcats won the Big 12 was in 2013 and it was shared with Kansas. Winning it this year would likely mean that the Jayhawks’ streak of consecutive titles would be over and that would be even sweeter to K-State fans.

Beating Kansas was awesome, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. K-State still has remaining road games against Baylor, Texas, West Virginia, Kansas, and TCU and will host Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Baylor, and Oklahoma to close out the year.

The toughest match-ups out of those is easily Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse and having to play ranked Iowa State, even if it’s at Bramlage. The Wildcats miraculously knocked off the Cyclones in Ames last month and you’d have to think Iowa State is out for blood now.

The key to this season’s success has definitely been having a healthy Dean Wade in the lineup. Ever since he’s returned to the starting lineup, the Wildcats haven’t lost a conference game. The two conference games he missed were both losses.

Wade had 12 points in the win over Kansas while Barry Brown went for 18, Xavier Sneed had 14, and Cartier Diarra had 11 off the bench. K-State had some offensive woes at times, but once they got it figured out, everything just seemed to click for the Cats.

Baylor is right behind Kansas State in the conference standings and Iowa State sits in third place. Kansas and Texas Tech are tied for fourth. If the Wildcats can end the season with only a few hiccups, there’s a very good chance that they could win the Big 12 title for the first time in six years.
