For many years running, the Kansas City Royals had early picks in the MLB Draft due to their lack of numbers in the win column. While some of those guys have been great for the team, others were a huge miss. Those misses resulted in the Royals not getting a player taken later on, who went on to be great.

KC Royals fans eagerly waited for years, 29 years to be exact, for “the plan” that Dayton Moore kept describing to pan out. The plan was for the young prospects to be ready to rise up to the occasion and help this franchise win baseball games, and ultimately, a championship.

While some of those picks have most definitely panned out (Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, among others), the Royals have painfully missed on others.

The only thing worse than picking a flop in the first round of any sports draft is to then go and look and see what other guys the team could have wound up with.

It’s certainly worth pointing out that even if the Royals had taken whoever is on this list, that doesn’t necessarily mean that their careers would have been the same, but still… Looking at the numbers makes it hard not to think about what could have been.

Onto the depressing stuff.
