The Kansas City Chiefs opened phase three of their off season program yesterday when they began their voluntary OTA’s (organized team activities).

Tons of news came out of the Chiefs practice facility, including the reports of Brandon Flowers and Justin Houston not showing up. Remember, these are VOLUNTARY. Houston is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will be looking to get P-A-I-D.

Flowers did make his first pro-bowl but struggled to find a fit in Bob Suttons single high defensive scheme. Half way through the season, Flowers found himself in the nickel role and in Pro Football Focuses bottom 15 of cover corners last season.

You just simply don’t pay a nickel corner $6.75 million annually, thus bringing us to all his latest trade rumors.

There is also the real possibility of the Chiefs cutting Flowers after June 1st, saving them roughly $7.5 million against the cap this year, AND, next year.

Perhaps Flowers knows that he’s a goner from the Chiefs after the first of June and that’s why he isn’t showing up to the camp. Why risk the injury of a voluntary work out if you know you’re about to be on the market?

Should be interesting to see how this all plays out.
