Free-Agent Rookies 2014

Grade: A

Since the purpose of this post is to grade the actual draft, it seemed fitting to group the undrafted free-agent rookies into one overall grade.

The Chiefs have four players on the roster that went undrafted in 2014. Albert Wilson, Charcandrick West, Cairo Santos, and Daniel Sorensen all saw action either in 2014, 2015, or both.

Not only did they see time, all were big contributors with the exception of Sorensen. It should be noted that Sorensen has doled out some big hits against his opponents. While he doesn’t see the field often, he hit’s hard when he hits.

Albert Wilson came on late in the season in 2014 trying to help the Chiefs find a touchdown via wide receiver. While he saw limited action in 2014, it earned the number-two job out of camp to start the 2015 season. He had a good year in 2015 gaining more than 400 yards and scoring twice. He also proved effective in the run-game from time to time.

Charcandrick West spent all of last year on the practice squad before edging out Knile Davis for the backup running back spot in 2015. When Jamaal Charles went down, the season seemed even more lost than it already was. West picked up the slack and gained nearly 850 yards from scrimmage in limited time as the starter. For a guy that nobody had heard of in week one, West propelled the Chiefs to a playoff berth. (He had some help from Spencer Ware, another undrafted free-agent that wasn’t with the Chiefs until 2015.)

Cairo Santos has been an adequate kicker, but the fact that the Chiefs didn’t have to burn a draft pick on him still makes it a good add. While he missed seven field goals this season, he did hit 26 of 29 from inside fifty yards. He was also perfect in the postseason hitting all five of his attempts. He doesn’t have a big leg and doesn’t put the ball out of the end zone as much as you’d like on kickoff, but he’s been a consistent kicker so far.

Given the success of the undrafted free-agents signed in 2014 coupled with the success of the late round picks has earned the Chiefs and John Dorsey a grade of ‘A’ for the 2014 draft in my opinion.
