Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Devin Funchess
The Kansas City Chiefs hold the 18th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, and have several other selections this year as well. It’s hard to imagine the Chiefs not using multiple picks on wide receivers, and one guy that should be available in round two is Devin Funchess out of Michigan.
Funchess is an interesting prospect because he actually played tight end for two years during his days as a Wolverine and switched to wide receiver his junior and final year. In three years with the Michigan Wolverines, Funchess caught 126 passes for 1,715 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Funchess would be an excellent addition to the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense because of his ability to play wide receiver and tight end. Obviously the Chiefs need help on the wide receiver end, but they have a recent need for a tight end as well, as they released Anthony Fasano last month.
Yes, Travis Kelce is a rising star in the tight end position in the NFL, but he’ll need some help. Funchess wouldn’t be a threat to Kelce’s starting role because he could predominantly be used as a receiver. I would love this addition and Funchess has some other bright spots as well, according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.

"Funchess was used outside and inside at Michigan and had success from the slot. He has the feel of a hybrid player who can be a big guy at wide receiver or a mismatch nightmare as a move tight end with more weight on his rangy frame."
Funchess is currently a second round projection, according to CBS Sports, and that would work well for Kansas City. The Chiefs could use their first round pick on a position like cornerback, safety, or an offensive lineman (whether it be at center or at right tackle), and then spend their second round pick on Devin Funchess.
Dane Brugler of CBS Sports compares Funchess to Kelvin Benjamin of the Carolina Panthers.
"Like Benjamin, Funchess has the size and athleticism to create mismatches, especially in the red zone and on third downs, but inconsistencies could keep both from reaching their top potential."
The Chiefs, funny enough, had a chance at landing Benjamin in last year’s draft, but passed on him. It would be nice to draft a guy of similar size and abilities to that of Kelvin Benjamin, who had a great rookie year in Carolina last season.
Devin Funchess could be a great weapon for Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs offense. Hopefully John Dorsey gives this kid a look, and he gets on a plane for Kansas City after the draft is over with.
