Sporting KC nearly opened the scoring in the tenth minute when captain Matt Besler sent a long throw in into the box. The ball fell loose in front of goal and Jalil Anibaba got his foot to it. The ball popped up and headed towards the goal, but New York goalkeeper Josh Saunders made the save.

Sporting KC had another opportunity off of a long throw in just two minutes later. Besler once again sent the long throw into the box, but this time defender Ike Opara rose up and powered a header past Saunders and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Sporting KC had the first goal of the game, and went up 1-0 in the 12th minute.

Sporting KC nearly added to their lead in the 32nd minute when Jimmy Medranda sent a ball up to Benny Feilhaber who had a cheeky back heel pass to Zusi at the top left side of the penalty box. Zusi fired a shot, but was too far underneath the ball, and it sailed high of the target.

The long throw in by Besler created havoc once again in the 43rd minute when the ball bounced around, and made its way to Paulo Nagamura who sent the ball back into the box. The ball fell for Jimmy Medranda who fired an absolute screamer towards goal, but it sailed just over the target.

New York City FC had their best opportunity of the game in the fourth minute of stoppage time when a ball was curled in from the right flank, and found the head of Grabavoy. He directed the ball towards goal, but it went just wide of the post.

After the win Sporting KC players Seth Sinovic, Benny Feilhaber, and Matt Besler took the opportunity to recreate Kansas City Royals legend George Brett’s famous pine tar incident at Yankee Stadium.
