Sporting KC fans received great news this morning when the organization announced 2019 Team MVP and Golden Boot winner Felipe Gutiérrez is returning to the club. Gutiérrez helped lead Sporting to a first-place finish in the Western Conference in 2018 and is signed through 2023 with a club option for 2024.

Gutiérrez is expected to join the team as soon as next week after a stint with Al Wasl in the United Arab Emirates.

His return comes at the perfect time for a Sporting club that sits just one point outside of the playoffs.

Felipe Gutiérrez Bolsters Sporting KC’s Playoff Hopes

One of the best midfielders in team history, Gutiérrez has been a marvel of consistency donning a KC uniform. He was named MLS Player of the Month in March 2018, his first with the club, and the following season became the fourth midfielder in Sporting history to notch double-digit goals (12).

Injuries cost the 32-year-old Chilean his 2020 season before he returned to Chile. Gutiérrez spent a brief stint with the Colorado Rapids in 2022 and now finds himself back with the organization he’s enjoyed his most success with.

Through two seasons with Sporting, Gutiérrez amassed 19 goals and seven assists while consistently providing stability in the midfield. That comes at a critical time for KC, as the team surged from the bottom of the standings to right outside of the playoff picture over the last several weeks.

With pivotal matches ahead against fellow playoff hopefuls, Sporting hopes Gutiérrez picks up where he left off to help lead the club on another deep playoff run.
