Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Devin Smith

facebooktwitterreddit

The 2015 NFL Draft is a month away and the Kansas City Chiefs have a variety of positions that need to be upgraded. One of those positions is wide receiver and the Chiefs more than likely will address that either in the first or second round. If Kansas City decides to wait until round two, Devin Smith out of Ohio State is a guy to keep an eye on.

Devin Smith played for the Ohio State Buckeyes all four years of his college career and was on the National Champion team in 2015. During his four years as a Buckeye, Smith had 121 receptions for 2,503 yards and 30 touchdowns. Smith saw his most success during 2014 (his senior year) when he caught 33 passes for 931 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Combine Results

Smith isn’t just combine-fast, he’s game-fast and he would have had more than 12 touchdown catches during the 2014 season if he didn’t have to slow down and wait on throws so often. – Lance Zierlein of NFL.com

Devin Smith has been linked with the Kansas City Chiefs in the past, most recently with Mel Kiper’s second mock draft in February. Kiper felt the Chiefs would be a good match for the Ohio State wide receiver due to the variety of ways Kansas City could use him.

"Devin Smith is a guy that probably wasn’t utilized as much as he would have been in some other offenses, but he was an often dynamic deep threat for the Buckeyes — a player who has a knack for the big catch, especially when he has to fight for the ball. He’s got good speed, he can stretch the field, and he plays bigger than his listed size on contested balls. The Chiefs could go a few ways here if they simply want to add a weapon, but Devin Smith would make sense."

Originally I wasn’t a fan of taking Devin Smith due to the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t necessarily a deep threat kind of a team when it comes to throwing the football. Some of that, however, had to do with the poor offensive line not giving Alex Smith a lot of time to make big plays.

With the offensive line adding some decent players, Alex Smith should be able to throw the football further down the field, and if so, Devin Smith could become Alex’s favorite guy to throw to in 2015.

The good thing about Devin Smith is that he very well could still be available in as late as the third round. This would bode well for Kansas City, as they have other positions they need to upgrade more so than wide receiver now that Jeremy Maclin is in town.
