Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Dorial Green-Beckham
The Kansas City Chiefs have a lot of different directions they can take with the 18th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. The one that many people have projected them to go with is addressing the wide receiver position. If the Chiefs decide to do that, Dorial Green-Beckham seems to be one that is linked to Kansas City the most.
Green-Beckham played his college football with the Missouri Tigers and the Oklahoma Sooners. He played for the Tigers for two seasons before being dismissed from the team due to several off the field incidents. Green-Beckham never played a snap for the Sooners in 2014, but elected to enter the 2015 NFL Draft regardless, and is now projected as a first or second rounder.
During his two seasons with Mizzou, DGB racked up 87 receptions for 1,278 yards and 17 touchdowns. Twelve of those touchdowns came during the 2013 season when he was only a sophomore. Not bad stats at all.

If it weren’t for the off the field incidents, I would desperately be hoping for Kansas City to draft this kid, but I’m just anxious about the drama he sparked while at Missouri. DGB had two marijuana related arrests and also pushed a woman down a flight of stairs, and while he was only charged for one of these incidents, DGB was dismissed from the Missouri Tigers and later found a new home with the Oklahoma Sooners.
I just don’t know if the risk is worth it. Maybe DGB will end up being a terrific pro wide receiver. Maybe he won’t. I just would feel better if the Kansas City Chiefs avoided drafting Dorial Green-Beckham at all costs.
Plus, the need for a wide receiver isn’t necessarily as desperate now that the Chiefs have Jeremy Maclin and re signed Jason Avant. This wide receiver class is deep enough that Kansas City could find themselves a great wide receiver in the second or even third round of the draft.

“I think the consistent problems for Josh Gordon are going to leak over and hurt his draft stock. He couldn’t keep himself out of trouble, had no structure growing up and didn’t take coaching at Missouri. He’s tall and fast and has good hands, but he can’t be trusted. Why would you take a guy like that before the third day?” — NFC director of personnel

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com compares Dorial Green-Beckham to Justin Hunter of the Tennessee Titans. He says that Green-Beckham has outstanding height and speed, which obviously bodes well for him, but that he struggles against physical cornerbacks. If he’s already struggling with corners in college, imagine how badly that could be for him in the pros.
Green-Beckham has been linked to the Kansas City Chiefs in several mock drafts, including in Mel Kiper Jr’s first mock draft and Todd McShay’s second mock draft. Now keep in mind that Kiper’s first mock was written in January and McShay’s second one was in February. In other words, both were before Kansas City had acquired Jeremy Maclin in free agency. That definitely changes things for the Chiefs, but here’s what the two analysts had to say about Green-Beckham potentially going to Kansas City.
"“The physical book on Green-Beckham is a good read: He’s got great length and can take the top off the secondary as a straight-line runner but also creates an impressive amount of space with quickness on short routes. He’s a red zone fear-factor player because he can just go up higher than anybody on the field to get the ball. The off-field book, however, is a major question. He was booted from one program because of off-field transgressions, and he’ll have no fun with the interview process as teams get answers about his past and maturity. But talent like this is hard to pass on.”– Kiper~~~The Chiefs would be taking a chance on him, given his behavioral baggage and the fact that he sat out the 2014 college football season, but based on the tape I’ve studied so far, Green-Beckham might be the most naturally gifted pass-catcher in this class. If Kansas City doesn’t want to take a receiver here, Miami OT Ereck Flowers would make some sense.– McShay"
The chances of getting DGB in the first round are very possible if the Chiefs want it to happen. He might even still be on the board in the second round, and I would be much more comfortable if Kansas City took that risk in round two rather than round one.
