Kansas City Chiefs Acquire Ben Grubbs From Saints

The Kansas City Chiefs are continuing to make a splash in the free agency pool, as they acquired former New Orleans Saints guard Ben Grubbs in exchange for a fifth round draft pick. Adam Schefter first broke the news via Twitter.
Chiefs traded this year's 5th-round pick to Saints for two-time Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs, per league source.

This is an excellent move for the Chiefs because their offensive line was dreadful in 2014, and Grubbs is a two time Pro Bowler.

The Chiefs’ offensive line allowed Alex Smith to be sacked 45 times in 2014, and all off season long, analysts have been dogging on Kansas City about their o-line issues. On Wednesday afternoon, the Chiefs signed Paul Fanaika of the Arizona Cardinals, and now they have another legit guard in Ben Grubbs.
Grubbs played his college football at Auburn and was the 29th overall pick in 2007 by the Baltimore Ravens, where he played until 2011. He then signed a five year deal with the Saints in 2012 and had his best years there (although one of his Pro Bowl years was in 2011 with the Ravens).
Chiefs fans have to be excited about this off season so far. Not only have the Chiefs beefed up the offensive line, but they acquired Jeremy Maclin from the Philadelphia Eagles to help out in the wide receiver game. They also signed former Oakland Raider Tyvon Branch to fill their need at safety.
With Grubbs and Fanaika on deck, this offensive line should be bigger and better in 2015.
With those positions being addressed, it’s more difficult to decide what will be the Chiefs’ first round pick come April. Up until this week, analysts had Kansas City going after a wide receiver. While the Chiefs could certainly still use help in these aforementioned positions, the need isn’t as desperate now.
I love what John Dorsey and the Kansas City Chiefs organization is doing now. Ben Grubbs is a reliable offensive guard and Smith won’t have to run for his life as much now. Hopefully this addition will give Smith more time to make plays and get the ball to his new wide receiver.

This news is especially welcoming, as the Chiefs couldn’t afford to keep center Rodney Hudson, who signed with the Oakland Raiders. Hudson was the best player on last year’s line. Eric Kush is expected to get an opportunity to prove himself, so expect some possible struggles there.
As for the rest of the line, Eric Fisher will be entering his third year in the league. It’s definitely time for Fisher to show up because Chiefs fans are not impressed with him so far after being the first overall pick in 2013.
Mike McGlynn was a joke last year and Jeff Linkenbach, his backup, wasn’t much better. Zach Fulton was a rookie last year and hopefully will come into his own during his second year. Ryan Harris needs work, and who knows what the team plans to do with Donald Stephenson?
With Grubbs and Fanaika on deck, this offensive line should be bigger and better in 2015. Chiefs fans should be excited about what’s happening during the off season. This could be a big year for the Kansas City Chiefs.
