2015 NFL Draft: Should the KC Chiefs Draft a Running Back

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs have 11 picks in the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft and have various different directions they could go in. While the Chiefs seem to be set at the running back position, is there any chance that Kansas City decides to pick up another guy to run the football?

Obviously you won’t see the Kansas City Chiefs going after guys like Melvin Gordon and Todd Gurley, as they’re both slated to be first round picks. More than likely, Kansas City will go with an offensive lineman or wide receiver in round one.

If the Chiefs do indeed decide to pick up a running back, which they might, it probably wouldn’t be until the back end of the draft. The positions that need to be filled first are offensive lineman, wide receiver, inside linebacker, cornerback, and safety and the Chiefs have more than enough picks to fill those needs.

The KC Chiefs have one of the best running backs in the NFL in Jamaal Charles. In fact, the Chiefs might have the best two running back tandem in the league with Knile Davis backing up Charles. Both guys have proven themselves and Davis has done more than enough to show that he’s deserving of filling in Charles when need be.

Options for the Kansas City Chiefs as far as running backs go would be Karlos Williams out of Florida State, Josh Robinson of Mississippi State, and local guy Marcus Murphy out of Missouri.

A main concern with Karlos Williams are his off the field issues, but it’s not like with Dorial Green-Beckham where he’d be a first round pick. Williams wouldn’t be drafted until the sixth or seventh round and there wouldn’t be too much pressure on him in his first year in the league. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com compares Williams’ play to that of Houston Texans running back Alfred Blue.

Josh Robinson, another late round option for Kansas City, could be a decent fit. Zierlein, however, doesn’t think Robinson has much burst and struggles to get extra yardage. He compares Robinson to Carolina Panthers fullback Mike Tolbert. Not a bad comparison by any means.

Marcus Murphy played his college football at Missouri, which is reason enough for the Chiefs to possibly go after him. Murphy isn’t projected to be drafted until the seventh round, which is mainly due to his small stature. Zierlein seems to think Murphy would be better suited in the backfield and/or as a slot receiver, which might be why Zierlein compared him to Dexter McCluster.

Regardless of what the KC Chiefs decide to do in the draft, we can pretty much bank on that they won’t take a running back until one of the later rounds.

Is there a certain running back that you’d like to see the Chiefs take in the draft?
