2015 NFL Draft: Should the KC Chiefs Draft a Quarterback

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs have five total quarterbacks on their roster at the moment. With the 2015 NFL Draft coming up, is there any chance that the Chiefs decide to add another quarterback through the draft?

Right now the Kansas City Chiefs are rolling with Alex Smith, Chase Daniel, Aaron Murray, Tyler Bray, and Terrelle Pryor under center. Obviously Smith is the starter and Daniel used to be the established backup. Now, however, Daniel is one of the players on the Chiefs’ team who could be let go to save cap space.

Pryor was picked up about a month ago and many thought that might be the beginning of the end for Chase Daniel. Kansas City still has Murray and Bray as well, both of whom have yet to take a single snap in the regular season. Bray injured his ACL and it might be difficult for him to make it onto 2015’s roster.

Looking at the quarterbacks in this year’s draft, there would be some options for Kansas City that wouldn’t be too terribly risky. For instance, the Chiefs could get a guy like Shane Carden out of East Carolina or Sean Mannion out of Oregon State in the fifth or sixth round.

  • Carden was a three-year starter at ECU and according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, has a high football IQ and comes from an athletic family. Zierlein doesn’t seem to think Carden has the potential to blossom into an NFL starter, but maybe sitting on the bench behind Alex Smith for a few years could help Shane Carden into becoming a possible starter.

Sean Mannion, on the other hand, started all four years of his college career at Oregon State and owns 18 passing records at his alma mater. Zierlein compares Mannion to Matt Schaub of the Oakland Raiders, which I don’t think is necessarily a good thing. Yes, Schaub had a decent few seasons in the pros, but digressed pretty quickly and that’s concerning to say the least.

You probably are wondering why I’m bashing these two guys, but still thinking they’d be good for the Chiefs. Well, that’s easy! Kansas City is pretty much set at the starting quarterback position, as Alex Smith signed a contract extension in the 2014 preseason and should be the Chiefs’ starting quarterback for several more years.

On the other hand though, the Kansas City Chiefs do have five total quarterbacks on their roster so is it really worth picking up another one? I’m definitely not for Kansas City taking a quarterback in one of the earlier rounds. There’s no need to take a guy like Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota. I’d say the earliest round to take a quarterback would be in the fifth and even then, it’s debatable if it’s a position that needs to be addressed.

What do you think? Should the KC Chiefs draft a quarterback this year?
