Andy Reid Teases Roster Addition Following Isiah Pacheco Injury
The Kansas City Chiefs' hard-fought Week 2 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals featured its fair share of casualties. Starting running back Isiah Pacheco appears to have fractured his fibula during the win, which will likely sideline him for the future as the Chiefs' backfield takes a hit in the process.
With the team's lead rusher injured, Chiefs fans are wondering who'll rise up to become the RB1 for the time being. While it's possible for someone like Carson Steele or Samaje Perine to step up to the challenger, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid has hinted at some potential outside help.
Chiefs News: GM Brett Veach Potentially Looking for Another RB
According to The Athletic's Nate Taylor, Reid revealed on Monday that Chiefs general manager Brett Veach is potentially looking to add another RB following Pacheco's injury. While it wasn't clarified if Veach is looking to accomplish that goal through free agency or the trade market, it's clear that the Chiefs likely aren't thrilled with their in-house options.
Veteran runner Clyde Edwards-Helaire would likely be the de facto RB1 under normal circumstances, however, his PTSD issues have him sidelined for now. Having said that, a glance at Kansas City's RB depth chart reveals that outside reinforcements might be necessary.
Perine — an eight-year veteran — has the most experience out of the Chiefs' backfield options, however, he's only started in four games since he made eight starts as a rookie. He's also only seen 19 total snaps through two games this season after being signed by Kansas City at the end of August.
The Chiefs also added former 2022 sixth-rounder Keaontay Ingram to the practice squad, however, he doesn't exactly inspire confidence. The ex-Texas/USC product only averaged an abysmal 2.2 rushing yards on 62 carries across two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.
That leaves undrafted rookies Carson Steele and Emani Bailey as the Chiefs' only other two options. Steele impressed with 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns during the preseason but hasn't replicated that success in the regular season while Bailey was left on the practice squad in both of Kansas City's first two games.
While free agency is largely devoid of big-name players at this point in the season, the Chiefs do have some available options. Kareem Hunt and Jerick McKinnon are two ex-Chiefs who have considerable experience playing for Reid while Matt Breida, Latavius Murray, and Boston Scott are other options.
We'll have a better idea about the pecking order in Kansas City's backfield during the Week 3 showdown against the Atlanta Falcons. Fortunately, the upcoming encounter looks promising for the Pacheco-less Chiefs as they're currently projected to be the 4.5-point road favorites against the Falcons, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
