Chiefs Coach Comments on Clyde Edwards-Helaire's Sudden Absence
By Jovan Alford
The Kansas City Chiefs will open up the 2024 NFL season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night.
It will be an exciting moment for Chiefs fans as they haven’t seen the team in a significant game at Arrowhead since Super Wildcard Weekend against the Miami Dolphins. However, one player of note will be missing from the Week 1 opener, veteran running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
The former first-round pick was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list on Monday, so he’ll miss the season's first four games. At the beginning of training camp in July, Edwards-Helaire revealed that he’s been living with PTSD, which caused him to miss some practices.
After the Chiefs finished practice on Monday, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy was asked about Edwards-Helaire’s sudden absence and had this to say.
“It’s for me; how I look at it is just from the personal side. We all have different things that we go through and Clyde (Edwards-Helaire) is such a special person,” Nagy said via Chiefs Wire.
“He’s a great human being. I think, number one, everybody in this building wants to make sure that Clyde is good on that side and that he’s happy and enjoying everything that he does because when he’s when he’s in the building, he’s phenomenal. So that’s number one, and then the other stuff all takes care of itself.”
The Chiefs offensive coordinator also said that the veteran running back is in a “good spot” and that they want the best for him.
Kansas City understands what the former first-round pick gives them on and off the field, and it’s clear they value that. With Edwards-Helaire out for at least four games, the Chiefs will depend on UDFA Carson Steele and veteran Samaje Perine as their RB2 behind starter Isiah Pacheco.
