Perfect Chiefs WR Trade Target Emerges After Jets-Raiders Blockbuster
After a well-deserved bye, the Kansas City Chiefs return to action in Week 7 when they travel to the Bay to take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The 49ers are one of the NFC's top teams, as usual, meaning the Chiefs will need all hands on deck to exit Levi's Stadium with the win.
Even though the Chiefs are a perfect 5-0 to begin the 2024 season, some extra help could be useful — especially in the wide receiver room. Wideouts Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown's absences have been notable, so it wouldn't be shocking if general manager Brett Veach attempts to add another pass-catcher before the Nov. 5 trade deadline.
Fortunately, the perfect potential target became available on Tuesday.
Chiefs Should Target WR Mike Williams Following Davante Adams Trade
The New York Jets pulled off a blockbuster trade on Tuesday when they acquired All-Pro wideout Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional third-round draft pick.
With Adams joining the likes of Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard in Aaron Rodgers' arsenal, New York could look to trade veteran wideout Mike Williams. If that's the case, the Chiefs must pick up the phone and give the Jets a call.
Williams, 30, is an eighth-year wideout who was drafted seventh overall by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017. The ex-Clemson wideout spent the first seven years of his career with the Chargers before signing a one-year contract with the Jets back in March. The hope was that Williams' speed would help him become one of Rodgers' top targets, however, that hasn't been the case.
Through his first six appearances this season, Williams has hauled in 10-of-17 targets (58.8%) for 145 receiving yards and seven first downs without a touchdown. He just hasn't been able to get on the same page as Rodgers, proven by the fact that he failed to catch any of his three targets in Week 6.
But just because Williams isn't working out on the Jets doesn't mean he can't turn things around with the Chiefs. Mahomes is the best quarterback in the sport at the moment and boasts a powerful arm that could take advantage of the veteran playmaker's speed.
Williams is also more than familiar with the organization after having faced them twice a year during his seven-season run with the Chargers. Arrowhead Stadium also became somewhat of a second home to him during that stretch. He's averaged 76.2 receiving yards per game with seven touchdowns in six career trips to Kansas City.
Williams also only carries a $2.7 million cap hit this season, per Spotrac, which is only going to grow smaller closer to the deadline. The Chiefs only have $3.6 million in remaining cap space, making it easy to see why GM Veach might be further enticed by a potential deal.
Considering how it will likely only take a late draft pick to land his services, Williams could become one of this year's more popular trade deadline targets. In other words, it's in the Chiefs' best interest to pull the trigger on a deal before it's too late.
