The Kansas City Chiefs did not make a selection in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, but now they have two second round choices for Friday night’s festivities. Will cornerback be one of those two picks?

Fans might have been surprised by Kansas City’s decision to trade out of the first round on Thursday night. Now, however, the team has two second rounders and could decide to use one of those two picks on a cornerback.

If that ends up being the case, Sean Davis could be one of the cornerbacks being looked at by the Chiefs.

Davis spent four seasons at Maryland and split time at cornerback and safety. That right there could be a reason why the Chiefs decide to go after him due to needing to address both positions in the secondary.

Kansas City obviously didn’t feel comfortable drafting someone at 28th overall. Maybe they felt like whoever they wanted to take would be a “stretch” or felt confident that the player they wanted would still be there at pick 37.

Either way, the Chiefs were smart and grabbed extra picks in the process.

Sean Davis gets credit from analysts due to his ability to block tight ends. He also is a (as CBS Sports puts it) “lights-out hitter” and makes big plays. Davis is always around the ball and is ready to make the tackle when needed.

It is worth noting, however, that Davis struggled in man coverage at times during his time with Maryland. He allowed 614 receiving yards against him and was penalized quite often. He also doesn’t have quick footwork for a cornerback, all of this according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.

Davis finished his four-year career with the Terrapins with 319 tackles, 14 defended passes, seven forced fumbles, and three interceptions. He has the stats to show for his impressive stint at Maryland, but can Davis handle being a starting cornerback or safety in the pros?

Per Zierlein,

"Miscast this season as an outside cornerback, Davis battled through adversity and bounced back with ball production, tackles and forced fumbles. Davis has the ability to cover, but his strengths would best be utilized at safety where he has fewer man responsibilities and can be deployed near the line of scrimmage a little more often. Davis is an eventual starter at safety and a big backup at cornerback."

This would be an interesting pick because even though Davis is entering the draft as a corner, he could definitely be utilized in the safety position. He’d be a versatile player in the secondary for Kansas City, and that’s definitely something the team has likely taken note of.
