Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Corey Coleman
The Kansas City Chiefs continue to look for a legit number two wide receiver in their system. Could Corey Coleman be that guy for Kansas City?
The KC Chiefs’ receiving corps in 2015 was leaps and bounds above the 2014 team. With the signing of former Missouri Tiger Jeremy Maclin last offseason, as well as the drafting of Georgia product Chris Conley in the third round, the position now has depth.
The issue was that when Jeremy Maclin was injured, the offense was not able to produce at the same level. It may be time to add a weapon, but Baylor standout Corey Coleman could possibly be the answer.
Jeremy Maclin is the clear number one target of Alex Smith, but there are a lot of options at the number two position. One of those being second year player Chris Conley, who in his rookie season showed the ability to step up on the big stage at times. In other times, he showed flaws of a rookie who needs a little more time before taking a larger role in the offense.
Albert Wilson is another option, who despite his small size, has been one of the surest hands that Alex Smith has to throw to.

Corey Coleman could be a huge upgrade from Albert Wilson. He has the speed and athletic ability that many saw in De’Anthony Thomas, but has the speed to be a constant deep threat.

According to NFL.com, Coleman has the immediate speed off the line and above average foot work. He has the ability to adjust to coverage, and to get the separation needed to get the ball.
Coleman’s best routes are the ones that are outside the numbers deep down the field. He shows good ability when it comes to the 50/50 ball and is competitive whenever the ball is in the air.

According to CBS Sports, he lacks the size that is needed from a receiver that strives outside the numbers. This would put him in the position of being a slot receiver.
Coleman has shown that due to his small size he tends to drop balls over the middle especially when he can feel the safeties and linebackers coming towards him.
The Chiefs have the 28th pick in the draft, so taking Coleman may not be the best move. Kansas City needs to bolster the defensive back position, but Coleman could be a good pick-up, especially with emerging talks of De’Anthony Thomas being involved in trade talks with San Francisco.

Maclin is the clear number one, but number two receiver is up in the air, and with a talent like Coleman the Chiefs can only reap the benefits of having more offensive weapons.
