The Kansas City Chiefs have several key defensive players hitting the free agent market this offseason. Will that push the Chiefs towards drafting a defensive player like Andrew Billings in the first round?

The KC Chiefs have been a team known for their stout defense over the past few seasons, but with several key players possibly moving on this offseason, could it be time to bring in a new set of defensive rookies? If so, Andrew Billings should get a look from the Chiefs.

Billings, a junior out of Baylor, is one of the best defensive tackles in the draft. He’s considered to be the second best and is a top 15 prospect, both according to CBS Sports.

While Billings is considered a top 15 prospect, the analysts at CBS Sports have him being available late in the first round, which is a good sign for the Chiefs. He’d be a great fit in their defense and could allow them to let other guys like Jaye Howard and even Mike DeVito go, if necessary.

Billings recorded five and a half sacks last season and had 107 total tackles in three seasons at Baylor.

Billings’ size makes him the perfect fit for any defense. He’s a big guy at 310 pounds, which would be a nightmare for any offensive lineman to block. I’m sure Andy Reid and Bob Sutton could find a place for him in their terrifying defense.

Some of the knocks on Billings, however, are that he’s impatient on the field and also is considered on the shorter side at 6’2″. NFL.com points out that Billings might be too young to play professionally and might need time to develop into a true NFL defensive tackle.

While that last part sounds a little concerning, Andy Reid is a good coach for those type of players. Plus, this team is still trying to figure out what they want to do with Dee Ford, so we’ve seen them be patient with players recently.

The analysts on CBS Sports have Billings being on the board as far as the 29th pick, where they predict the Arizona Cardinals will select him. This is the first scouting report I’ve done where the player was actually projected still be on the board when the Chiefs are on the clock.

The Kansas City Chiefs have several different directions they can go in in this draft, and it’ll be interesting to see which path they take. They can continue to draft on defense and build up their core, or they can add to the offense.
