Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Jared Goff
The Kansas City Chiefs seem to be all set at the quarterback position, but what about the backup quarterback? Chase Daniel could be on his way out of Kansas City, so should the Chiefs turn to the 2016 NFL Draft as their answer?
The KC Chiefs have a few options as far as their backup quarterback spot is concerned. They can:
- Re-sign Chase Daniel
- Plan to have Tyler Bray or Aaron Murray serve as the backup
- Draft a new guy to fill that spot
For the purposes of this article, say the Chiefs decide to go with option three. If the Chiefs want the best quarterback in the 2016 NFL Draft class, then they’d have to trade up to get California quarterback Jared Goff.
Goff, a junior at California, put up big numbers as the Golden Bears’ starting quarterback. He was the team’s starter all three years and managed to look like one of the best quarterbacks in the Pac-12 during that time.
His career totals are as follows:

Goff appears to be the most talented guy in a lackluster quarterback class and it’s EXTREMELY doubtful that the Kansas City Chiefs trade up to get him.
They’re all set with Alex Smith as the starter, and Goff wouldn’t be the type of guy a team would want sitting on the bench for three or four years.
What Goff is good at is picking apart defenses. He’s great at throwing the ball deep and isn’t afraid to take a chance with tight windows. He’s also good at detecting blitzes and finding the open man.
Some of the knocks on Goff are that he’s not a running quarterback. Chiefs fans have grown to enjoy having mobile quarterbacks, and Goss does not possess that talent. He’s the type who will take a hit rather than run with the football. Goff also tends to rush the throw and has lost 11 fumbles over three years.

If the Chiefs do decide to take a quarterback in the 2016 NFL Draft, it likely won’t be one Jared Goff. Goff is considered the top quarterback this year and the fourth-best prospect overall.
While he won’t go number one overall (assuming Tennessee keeps the top spot), he’ll likely be the second player off the board, as it looks like the Cleveland Browns might try to make him their guy.
If Kansas City wants to take a quarterback this year, they could consider some of the later round guys, such as Jake Coker out of Alabama or Kevin Hogan out of Stanford. They could also see what they’ve got with Bray and Murray, as neither of these players have had a chance to prove themselves yet.
