KC Chiefs: Will Jeremy Maclin Addition Change Draft Plans
The KC Chiefs are expected to sign Jeremy Maclin once the free agency negotiation window opens at 3:00 PM on Tuesday. With Maclin on board, wide receiver isn’t as dire of a need for the Chiefs. Will the addition of Jeremy Maclin mean a new game for the Chiefs come draft day?
In all of the previous mock drafts, the Kansas City Chiefs have been projected to select a wide receiver in almost all of them. Whether it be Dorial Green-Beckham, DeVante Parker, Jaelen Strong, or whomever – the Chiefs were a team in desperate need of a number one threat on the receiver depth chart.

What should Kansas City do now in the first round of the draft?
Personally, I say go after the best player available that fits what the KC Chiefs need. The positions that need help are at cornerback, inside linebacker, offensive line, and at safety. Wide receiver still needs help too, but it’s not really a first round necessity now.
I think offensive line is what needs to be addressed the most, specifically the left guard position. Mike McGlynn and Jeff Linkenbach are not the answers there, and we learned that the hard way last season, as Alex Smith was sacked 45 times.
The best offensive linemen available that are slated to be first round picks are Brandon Scherff, Andrus Peat, La’el Collins, T.J. Clemmons, and Ereck Flowers, all of whom are offensive tackles. The Chiefs could certainly use help on the right side as well, and who knows how well Eric Fisher will do in his third pro season.
There are several first round options at cornerback if the KC Chiefs decided to go that route. Trae Waynes is the only “for sure first round projection”, but there’s also guys like Kevin Johnson, Marcus Peters, Quinten Rollins, and P.J. Williams, who are considered first or second round prospects.
Safety has a fairly weak draft class this year, but it is worth noting that Kansas City agreed to terms with former Raiders safety Tyvon Branch on a one year deal on Tuesday morning. Branch has been injury prone in the past, but if he’s healthy he’ll help the secondary tremendously.

Alabama’s Landon Collins has been linked with the KC Chiefs in a few mock drafts that I’ve seen, but other than him, the safety draft class this year looks pretty slim.
As for inside linebacker, only one guy stands out as a potential first rounder and that’s Eric Kendricks of UCLA.
My advice would be to draft the best player available out of the positions mentioned prior in the first round and then grab a wide receiver in the second round. That way 2015’s roster would look like Maclin, second round receiver, Albert Wilson, and possibly Jason Avant (depending on what his future here is). Also, De’Anthony Thomas is an option to plug in there as well, and Junior Hemingway also could be back with the team.
