2015 NFL Draft: Should The KC Chiefs Trade Up To Draft A Receiver

facebooktwitterreddit

The 2015 NFL Draft is right around the corner and the KC Chiefs desperately need an upgrade at the wide receiver position. With that said, will the team trade up to try and grab one of the more dominating forces?

Right now, the top prospects in this year’s wide receiver class are Amari Cooper, Dorial Green-Beckham, DeVante Parker, Jaelen Strong, and Kevin White. Out of all of those guys, White is actually projected to be the first wide receiver off the board, according to Todd McShay’s third mock draft on ESPN.com (Note: You must be an Insider subscriber to read the full article). Cooper originally had that honor, but after White’s impressive showing at the Combine, scouts are now putting him at the top of the wide receiver board.

As of lately, the Kansas City Chiefs have been connected with Dorial Green-Beckham in a lot of the big time mock drafts (i.e. Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay). Fans are a bit anxious about this selection due to Green-Beckham’s not so great history off the field, yet DGB is the best projected guy on the board by the time pick 18 rolls around.

So, I ask again, would it be in Kansas City’s best interest to trade up and draft one of the better guys?

White has been projected to go as early as the fourth overall pick to the Oakland Raiders (blech) so the Chiefs would have to trade as far up to the third overall pick if they wanted to steal him from Oakland. I don’t see that happening.

I could, however, be okay with the team trading to the 10th pick or so and trying to land Amari Cooper. Cooper was originally said to be the best receiver in the draft (I remember during the actual college football season, some were saying he could potentially be the first overall pick) and I would be fine with the Chiefs jumping up to try and grab him.

Erik Lambert of NFL Mocks agreed with me and felt that Amari Cooper would greatly benefit the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Dwayne Bowe could be out soon and Donnie Avery is already gone. The Kansas City Chiefs are depleted at the position. They don’t have a lot of money to fix it in free agency, so being able to somehow land a difference-maker like Amari Cooper with be an outright steal.~~~The NFL draft tends to favor proven receivers. That could mean Cooper will have to go somewhere near the bottom of the top 10 just based on value. So that could mean one of these teams will have to trade up to get him. Otherwise keep an eye on Atlanta, New York and Minnesota as well.Live Feed kansas city chiefsJonathan Taylor Next Team Odds: 3 Contenders That Make Sense for Star Running BackBetsidedShould the KC Chiefs consider an extension for Harrison Butker?Arrowhead AddictDanny Shelton feels ready to contribute to KC Chiefs title defenseArrowhead AddictNFL Rumors: 5 Jonathan Taylor trade packages Colts can't possibly turn downFanSidedCaesars + FanDuel Promos: Back Chiefs in Preseason Week 3, Win $450 Bonus + $100 Off NFL Sunday Ticket!Arrowhead AddictChiefs Rumors: Pacheco injury, Shane Buechele shoutout, QB predictionFanSided"

Like Lambert touched on, Dwayne Bowe might be on his way out the door if he’s not willing to work out some sort of new deal. The Chiefs don’t have a lot of money to replace him in free agency, so that’s where trading up in the draft would help immensely.

With a guy like Amari Cooper on the offense, the Chiefs wouldn’t struggle as much on offense and it’d give the team a solid receiver to rely on for years to come. I don’t know if I would feel that way about Dorial Green-Beckham after his off the field issues that led to him being dismissed from Missouri.

While fans might be content with the KC Chiefs trading up in the draft, I don’t really see it happening. John Dorsey isn’t a “trade up in the draft” kind of guy, and he’ll likely just go with whoever the best on the board is by the time pick 18 rolls around. It’s also very possible that Dorsey and company won’t even take a wide receiver in round one.

Yes, the Chiefs could look to add a guy like Jeremy Maclin in free agency, but that would break the non-existent bank. The team is already in a bind with having to give Justin Houston a big contract and hopefully re sign Rodney Hudson.

Would you want the Chiefs to trade up in the draft?
