Kansas Jayhawks Basketball: Don’t Sleep On TCU Horned Frogs

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas Jayhawks basketball team faces an opponent on Saturday in the TCU Horned Frogs that may have looked like an easy win on the schedule a few months ago. Not so much now, as TCU (16-10, 3-10) is on a two-game winning streak.

The Horned Frogs won only two games in their first two seasons in the Big 12, including one over Kansas two seasons ago. They didn’t win any last season in conference. This season, they have three wins, all at home, against Texas Tech, 21st ranked Oklahoma State last weekend, and Kansas State on Wednesday.

TCU also has wins over three other Power Five conference opponents earlier in the year, as they went 13-0 in non conference play.

They still haven’t won on the road in their time in the Big 12, but they aren’t the pushover they have been in the past. They took ranked Baylor and West Virginia to overtime on the road, and lost by just five at Kansas Sate.

Earlier this season, TCU lost to the Kansas Jayhawks (21-5, 10-3) by just three points, and Kansas had to scrap their way out of Fort Worth with a slim win.

Kansas should win this game easily. They should be double digit favorites. That being said, few games have been easy for the Jayhawks this season.  While they lead the Big 12 in margin of victory in conference play at +8.5 points, most games seem to be dogfights until the very end.

The Jayhawks are coming off a tough road loss to west Virginia. They lost the game in the last 8.3 seconds, when they failed to contain Juwan Staten, then failed to make a lay-up at the buzzer.

The Kansas Jayhawks love playing at home, but the Horned Frogs’ confidence may be at an all-time high since their entry into the Big 12.

If Kansas comes out flat, or if they are still down about the loss on Tuesday, and TCU is fired up, they will have another tussle on their hands. The Jayhawks must be focused on the task at hand, and not look past TCU.

The Jayhawks’ stumble against the Mountaineers cut their lead down to just one game over Iowa State with five games to go. Kansas still has to go to Kansas State, who would love nothing more than to pull an upset.

The Kansas Jayhawks basketball still has to host Texas, who will be looking for a little revenge after KU beat the Longhorns in Austin, and West Virginia, who just proved they could compete with Kansas. The Jayhawks then have to finish the season at Oklahoma.

There is little wiggle room for the Jayhawks if they wish to win their 11th straight conference title. They cannot stub their toe against TCU at home and feel great about their chances. There is a good chance Kansas will loose at least one of those final four games. That’s fine; they play four tough opponents.

TCU is a game Kansas should win. At this point, they have to take care of their home court.
