2015 NFL Draft: Recent Mock Draft Has KC Chiefs Selecting Safety

With the 2015 NFL Draft just months away, analysts all around the league are debating which college football players will go where. Most KC Chiefs fans are hoping that the team picks up either a wide receiver or an offensive lineman, but NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah has a different perspective for the KC Chiefs.

For the most part, I actually really like this pick. The Chiefs do need a wide receiver, but this draft is plenty deep as far as wide receiver talent goes. My only complaint is that if the Chiefs go with a defensive player, they should either go with an inside linebacker or a cornerback.

Here is what Jeremiah had to say,

"The Chiefs have a desperate need at wide receiver, but they can find help in other rounds. Collins is the only safety worthy of a first-round selection, and if he’s still on the board I think they would go in that direction."

I hadn’t really considered the Kansas City Chiefs taking a safety in the first round, but it wouldn’t be a bad option by any means. While Eric Berry is progressing (see tweet below), it’s still not a bad idea to pick up another safety in the first round. Plus, like Jeremiah mentioned, Landon Collins is the best safety available in the draft so if he’s still there by pick 18, he might be difficult to pass up on.

The Chiefs didn’t have many problems with their secondary during 2014 despite not having any big names. Ron Parker filled in nicely at safety in Berry’s absence, but who knows if he’ll have another decent year? Adding a guy like Landon Collins adds insurance to a team that has become a dominant defensive team.

If the Chiefs decided to add any other defensive player, I would suggest going after Marcus Peters (out of Washington) or P.J. Williams (out of Florida State), both cornerbacks. I don’t, however, think the KC Chiefs will beef up the defense in round one though. I see this team making a strong attempt to boost the offense and that starts with adding pieces to the offensive line and giving Alex Smith some talented wide receivers to throw the football to.

Picking up a guy like Landon Collins would make this Kansas City Chiefs’ defense even scarier in 2015.
