Todd McShay Mock Draft: KC Chiefs First Pick

With the 2015 NFL Draft approaching in May, Todd McShay released his first mock draft of the off season on Thursday. McShay agrees with just about everybody else in the mock draft world by thinking that the KC Chiefs will take a wide receiver. McShay predicts that with the 18th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs will select Kevin White, a wide receiver out of West Virginia.

"“White would upgrade the receiving corps with his excellent size-and-speed combo. He still needs to develop as a route runner but is a natural when it comes to separating from coverage when the ball is in the air. White is also dangerous after the catch, which adds to his value for a team in need of perimeter playmakers.”– McShay on ESPN’s website (Note: You must be an Insider subscriber to read the entire article)"

I definitely like this pick more than Mel Kiper’s selection of Dorial Green-Beckham out of Oklahoma. Kevin White had 1,954 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in two seasons with the West Virginia Mountaineers. In the very first mock draft simulation I did, I had the Chiefs taking White in the first round.

McShay isn’t the only only who thinks White would be a good selection for the KC Chiefs. Eric Galko of Sporting News thought the same thing in his mock draft he posted last week.

"Zero receiving touchdowns by their receivers. That’s what the Chiefs dealt with all year. With a talented receiver class in 2015, there will be more than a few options for them in the mid-first round, including White, who’s length and route-running would give Alex Smith a feature weapon."

We’re all sick of hearing that “no wide receiver touchdown” stat and would love for that to change n 2015. At this point, it seems evident that everyone sees Kansas City selecting a receiver in round one rather than an offensive lineman or an inside linebacker (two other needs for the Chiefs).

White would be a good fit for the Chiefs because they have a glaring need for a talented wide receiver. Right now, the main receivers on Kansas City’s roster are Dwayne Bowe, Donnie Avery, Junior Hemingway, A.J. Jenkins, Jason Avant, and Albert Wilson. Only three of those guys are worth keeping in 2015.

While I want the Kansas City Chiefs to grab a wide receiver early on, I’m picky about which one they take. I would be perfectly okay with the Chiefs taking Kevin White due to (as McShay mentioned) his ability to do grab deep catches and the traditional routes that the offense often ran in 2014.

With a guy like White on the team (and hopefully an improved offensive line) maybe this would open up opportunites for Alex Smith to throw some balls down the field. He never had many chances to in 2014 due to limited protection and the lack of talent at the receiver position.
