The Kansas City Chiefs had nine total picks in the 2016 NFL Draft. With the draft over and done with, the Chiefs still have an opportunity to pick up some undrafted free agents.

Even if a college prospect doesn’t get drafted, there is still hope for him to make his NFL dreams become a reality. These are called undrafted free agents, and there have been some pretty good ones over the years.

Chiefs fans probably have heard of a guy named Priest Holmes, right? Holmes was an undrafted free agent out of Texas after the 2000 NFL Draft. He went on to be one of the best running backs in KC Chiefs history.

There are also other guys like Tony Romo, who went undrafted in 2003 and has gone on to have quite the career with the Dallas Cowboys.

Some recent names that the Chiefs have picked up as undrafted free agents are Tyler Bray, Cairo Santos, and Albert Wilson. Bray is currently still with the team and was given an extension last offseason, Santos is heading into his third year as the team’s kicker, and Wilson has started several games at wide receiver.

This year the Chiefs have signed 11 undrafted free agents, and there is some potential in this bunch for sure.

The biggest needs for the Kansas City Chiefs heading into the NFL Draft were in the secondary, along the offensive line, and at wide receiver.

Along the line, the Chiefs have added Siaosi Aiono and Jake Bernstein. Aiono played different positions on the offensive line at Utah and Bernstein spent time as a guard while at Vanderbilt.

The Chiefs picked up two receivers in Brandon Eakins out of The Citadel and Mitch Mathews out of BYU. Eakins ended his final season at The Citadel with 14 receptions for 216 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 54 yards rushing and a trip to the end zone as well. Mathews had 54 receptions for 737 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Secondary wise, the Chiefs signed Vernon Harris out of Dartmouth, Tre Jones from Mount Union, and Trey Wesley from Samford. With the Chiefs heavily addressing their secondary in the draft, it’ll be interesting to see if any of these guys make the final cut.

The other guys signed were:

  • Dylan Detwiler, Long Snapper (Fresno State)
  • Desmond Jackson, Defensive Tackle (Texas)
  • Michael Nysewander, Fullback (Alabama)
  • Terrance Smith, Linebacker (Florida State)
