KC Chiefs: Would Robert Griffin III Make Sense For Chiefs

facebooktwitterreddit

Robert Griffin III, a former second overall pick in 2012, is riding the bench for the Washington Redskins, and could be donning another team’s uniform in the future. Could the KC Chiefs be that team?

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t necessarily looking for a starting quarterback, as they have Alex Smith under contract for the next three years. Still though, would it be worth bringing Robert Griffin III in as a possible backup or just to light a fire under Smith?

RG3 was all the rage during his college days at Baylor University, and the Washington Redskins wanted him to lead them to the next level. They traded three first round picks and a second round pick to the St. Louis Rams in order to jump up to that second spot and make RG3 their quarterback of the future.

Griffin, however, only had one good year in the NFL, and it was his rookie year. RG3 led the Redskins to their first NFC East title since 1999. Washington went on to lose in the first round of the playoffs, but what RG3 accomplished during his rookie season was impressive.

He went 9-5 as a starter (he did miss one game that season), throwing for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns. Griffin only threw five picks his rookie season.

The next season, Robert Griffin III threw for just a few more yards in two less games and led the team to a 3-10 record. He threw four less touchdowns and twice as many interceptions (12 total on the year). Griffin was benched for the last three games in 2013.

This past season was when his career was trending downwards though, as he only played in nine games and only started seven of them. Injuries plagued his 2014 season, but poor play was equally as responsible, as RG3 only threw four touchdowns to six interceptions. He went 2-5 as a starter.

It might be too early to label Robert Griffin III as a bust, but he has definitely not lived up to his second overall pick title. He especially has not been worth what the Washington Redskins gave up to acquire him.

CHECK OUT: CHIEFS FANS HAVE A RIGHT TO BE SKEPTICAL

Personally, I would not want RG3 to join the Chiefs. Not at all. He’s injury prone and has shown consistency problems in the NFL. His coaches have never seemed too big on him (Mike Shanahan benching him in 2013 in case of injuries despite Washington not being in any type of race, and Jay Gruden choosing to start Kirk Cousins over him this season), and it just wouldn’t be a good move.

Andy Reid would probably love a quarterback like RG3 though. He’s worked with Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick in the past, both mobile quarterbacks, and has Alex Smith at the moment, who is also a mobile quarterback. RG3 would probably do okay in Reid’s system, but his play the past two seasons along with his injuries and his attitude are huge turn offs.

Pass.
