KC Chiefs: Fans Have A Right To Be Skeptical

facebooktwitterreddit

KC Chiefs fans are some of the best in all of the NFL, and even in all of sports.

That being said, Chiefs fans are completely justified not to buy the hype of what the 2015 season has in store for us. Why, you ask? Well, if history is any indication, the Kansas City Chiefs tend to let down their fans each and every year.

After winning the AFC West in 2010, the 2011 Kansas City Chiefs came out of the gate by getting clobbered in their first two games. They were outscored 89-10. Yikes!

Now granted, the Chiefs did finish that season at 7-9 after beating the undefeated Green Bay Packers, but getting blown out to less than stellar teams like the Jets and the Dolphins. They ended up being a missed field goal away from making the postseason. What a weird season.

2012… Yeah, we’re not going there.

2013 was a nice surprise after coming off a 2-14 season, but it ended sourly. Let’s never speak of it again.

The 2014 season was supposed to be a nice treat too but didn’t start off well. Kansas City started off 0-2 including a spanking from the Tennessee Titans in week one where Alex Smith threw three interceptions, and the defense looked shaky.

We later found out that the Titans were not a very good team. They won just two games all season, including beating the KC Chiefs in week one. Kansas City should have won that game at home.

Now don’t get me wrong. The 2015 roster looks pretty dang good, and this is a team that, should they play to their potential, can do quite well.

There’s the other side, though; the side I like to call the “Kansas City” side.

I’ve grown up in Kansas City. Born and raised here. I’ve never seen the Kansas City Chiefs or Kansas City Royals win a championship. Until it happens, I might just keep believing that it’s this magical thing we dream about but never get to experience in real life.

  • Until last year, I never saw either of my teams win a PLAYOFF game. The Chiefs last won one when I was three years old, so I doubt I was locked onto the TV, enjoying that moment. I was probably sleeping, playing with my toys, or crying about something. Maybe all three at once, who knows?

The point is that as much as I hear how much potential this year’s KC Chiefs team has… I won’t believe it until they win games, make it to the playoffs (hopefully after having won the division for the first time in five years), and… here’s the tricky part… WIN a playoff game.

The last several years of KC Chiefs football has always steered us wrong. We’re supposed to be amped about the new season each and every year, but instead, it just ends in disappointment. The same disappointment actually, which concludes with yet again not winning a playoff game.

Drew Magary of Deadspin summed it up well in his “Why Your Team Sucks” series about the Chiefs:

"Anyway, the Chiefs exist now as early round playoff lunch meat. They gave up a home game to London just because Roger Goodell pretended to consider their dump of a stadium for hosting a Super Bowl. They are the league’s straight man, here to take a pie to the face for your enjoyment. Being a Chiefs fan means you never get to be the hero. You don’t get the girl. You don’t get any of the good lines. You are a minor obstacle for the main characters—Patriots, Broncos, Colts, etc.—to overcome on the path to glory. You will always be a supporting player in some other person’s story. You are The Baxter. Andy Reid will make sure of it."

I’d like to argue with this, but until the Chiefs take the next step, it’s hard to disagree. We’re Chiefs fans. We’re use to disappointment.

Time for the Kansas City Chiefs to take the next step. We’ve been waiting patiently.
