KC Chiefs Making Final Push To Re-sign Rodney Hudson

The KC Chiefs are making an 11th hour push to re-sign center Rodney Hudson before the league year starts March 10, according to NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora.

LaCanfora tweeted Saturday afternoon:

LaCanfora’s report comes after sources reported numerous teams interested in the Kansas City Chiefs center, including the Denver Broncos, the Oakland Raiders, and the Washington Redskins.

The news comes after the KC Chiefs made multiple moves this week to reshape their roster before the start of the league year, including cutting defensive end Vance Walker and inside linebacker Joe Mays. The KC Chiefs are also attempting to restructure outside linebacker Tamba Hali‘s contract to obtain more cap room.

Whether KC Chiefs general manager John Dorsey can pull off a deal with Rodney Hudson before free agency starts could impact decisions he makes with players such as wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, because he will need to know just how much room he needs to create.

The Kansas City Chiefs have already committed $14.8 million toward tagging outside linebacker Justin Houston.

I find it hard to believe that Dorsey can cut any kind of deal with Hudson without either coming to some kind of reduction to Bowe’s $14 million cap number, or an outright release.

Hudson ranked 3rd in Pro Football Focus‘ center ratings in 2014. He was also the only center in the NFL that earned a positive rating in all four of Pro Football Focus’ categories to grade centers: Pass Block, Screen Block, Run Block, and Penalties.

Rodney Hudson was pretty much the only effective blocker on the KC Chiefs’ 2014 line, given the continuing struggles of left tackle Eric Fisher and the rookie growing pains of right guard Zack Fulton. Journeymen Mike McGlynn at left guard and tackle Ryan Harris were late fill-ins last season that need to be replaced.

Rodney Hudson came to Kansas City Chiefs as a 2nd round draft pick in the 2011 draft, after earning two All-America nods as a guard at Florida State. He emerged as a starter in 2013, after missing all but three games in his second year due to injury. He finally realized his potential in 2014, becoming the only really solid piece on an otherwise poor offensive line.

Signing Rodney Hudson would be a big help to next year’s offensive line, and the continued health of quarterback Alex Smith.
