KC Chiefs: Tamba Hali Re-Negotiating Contract

facebooktwitterreddit

Tamba Hali and the Kansas City Chiefs are working on re-negotiating his contract for the 2015 season, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Teicher.

Hali told Teicher on Friday:

"“It’s not about the numbers for me,’’ he said. “It’s about whether the situation makes sense for them because I want to be there and play for the Chiefs. The general manager [John Dorsey] and coach [Andy] Reid, they know I want to be there. That’s why I say it’s a matter of how I fit into what the Chiefs want to do for the season.“They’re talking numbers so I’m optimistic I’ll still be there.’’"

The reports has also been confirmed by a source to the Kansas City Star according a tweet by Terez A. Paylor:

Further, Tamba Hali himself is tweeting like he expects to be back with the KC Chiefs next season:

Connect the dots, and it appears as if a new deal to keep Tamba Hali in Red and Gold is only a matter of time, and could come in the next few days.

The KC Chiefs have to get under the cap for the beginning of the new league year on March 10. The team has to find a way to fit the cost of tagging linebacker Justin Houston as the team’s franchise player, which is expected to eat up $14.8 million in cap space.

According to website Over-the-Cap, Tamba Hali currently carries an $11.96 million cap number for 2015, with $9 million salary and bonuses. This number will have to come down for a soon-to-be 32-year-old player who only put up 6 sacks last season.

The Chiefs also have outside linebacker Dee Ford poised to take over Hali’s spot in the near future, but the rookie only notched 0.5 sacks last season. He clearly can use some more seasoning, which Hali’s return will allow.

Tamba Hali seems certain to someday win election to the Kansas Chiefs Hall-of-Fame with 79.5 sacks (3rd most in club history behind Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith). Hali also has 387 career tackles and ranks second in forced fumbles with 31 to Derrick Thomas.

Hali hopes to finish his career as a Kansas City Chief and general manager John Dorsey looks ready to accomodate him. That’s nothing but good news for Kansas City Chiefs fans.
