Mel Kiper Mock Draft: KC Chiefs First Pick

facebooktwitterreddit

With all of the buzz over the 2015 NFL Draft in May, everyone knew that Mel Kiper’s mock draft would be making its first appearance of the year soon. Kiper released his first official mock draft on Thursday and had the KC Chiefs taking Dorial Green-Beckham out of the University of Oklahoma.

Most people probably remember Green-Beckham from his days as a Missouri Tiger, where he played for two seasons. His breakout year was in 2013 where he had 883 yards receiving with 12 touchdowns.

Green-Beckham was later dismissed from the team due to off the field problems. He then transferred to Oklahoma for 2014, but didn’t play a single snap.

Here is what Kiper said about the possible selection,

"“We all know about the Chiefs’ singular lack of ability to generate touchdowns from their wide receivers, and that makes Green-Beckham a potential risk worth taking. The physical book on Green-Beckham is a good read: He’s got great length and can take the top off the secondary as a straight-line runner but also creates an impressive amount of space with quickness on short routes. He’s a red zone fear-factor player because he can just go up higher than anybody on the field to get the ball. The off-field book, however, is a major question. He was booted from one program because of off-field transgressions, and he’ll have no fun with the interview process as teams get answers about his past and maturity. But talent like this is hard to pass on.”– Mel Kiper on ESPN’s website (You must be an Insider subscriber to read full article)"

I’m not sure how I feel about this choice. Sure, Dorial Green-Beckham looked good when he was with Missouri, but it’s not his talent that concerns me. Like I mentioned above and Kiper mentioned in his article, Green-Beckham had some troubles off the field and I just don’t want the Kansas City Chiefs to have any type of distractions during the season.

If Kansas City takes the risk of drafting Dorial Green-Beckham, then hopefully it pays off. I’m still scarred from the whole Jonathan Baldwin thing, and am terrified of taking a wide receiver early on for that reason alone, especially one that we know has had issues off the field and was DISMISSED from the team because of them!

There are plenty of other solid options at the wide receiver position and those guys don’t have a bad history they’d be bringing with them. I hope the KC Chiefs stay away from Dorial Green-Beckham. That’s just me though.
