Key Chief Thinks New Rule Change Will Extend His Career
By Joe Summers
Justin Reid's career has enjoyed a prosperous week after he revealed on Chris Long's Green Light podcast that the Chiefs planned for him to handle kickoffs.
It's good from a football perspective due to Reid's obvious tackling skills, though it's also good for the two-time Super Bowl champion's long-term prospects as well. Reid is one of the few players in the NFL who tackles and kicks capably.
Listen to him tell it, and he's fully aware of what that could mean for his career.
Justin Reid Thinks New NFL Kickoffs Will Extend His Career
He's got a point. As Reid explains, "We might have added some time to my career. You might've extended my show a couple (of) years. The earning window is huge with this. When I'm done being the starting guy on safety, I can turn into that rotational third safety and also be a kickoff specialist."
Reid is obviously excited about the possibility. For what it's worth, I think he's got a future in the podcast industry after his playing career is done as well.
Special teams have changed drastically with the new kickoff rule that lets the kickoff team start running as soon as the ball hits the ground. Tackling is almost a prerequisite ability for kickers in that position, otherwise you risk injury for the man responsible for making field goals.
It's one of the more interesting rule changes in recent years and Reid is fully prepared to take advantage of it. The Chiefs are as well, and they're clearly happy to have Reid on the roster.
