Justin Reid Reveals Stunning Detail About Chiefs' Super Bowl-Winning Play
By Joe Summers
Patrick Mahomes' Super Bowl-winning TD pass to Mecole Hardman to earn Kansas City its second straight championship will live forever in Chiefs' lore, though Justin Reid recently revealed the play wasn't supposed to go to Hardman.
Appearing on the Green Light podcast with Chris Long, Reid explained the pass was meant to be a shovel to RB Jerick McKinnon underneath. 49ers DE Nick Bosa had McKinnon covered, so Mahomes immediately rolled out to Hardman for the TD.
Knowing that Mahomes improvised the play makes it even better, especially considering how quickly the three-time Super Bowl MVP looked Hardman's way.
Justin Reid Reveals Patrick Mahomes' Super Bowl-Winning TD Wasn't Meant for Mecole Hardman
While explaining how he ran onto the field in celebration trying to find Hardman or Mahomes, Reid said, "That play is so crazy, you know, because Patrick actually freelanced that play. It was actually supposed to be a shovel pass but Bosa blew it up."
If you watch the replay above, you can see Bosa immediately cover McKinnon. Reid continues, "Patrick just saw that Mecole was open. He wasn't really supposed to get the ball on this play, but this is just part of the 'Mahomes Magic' on what he does...He's just a baller and makes things happen."
You can say that again. Mahomes routinely leads epic game-winning drives and perhaps none was sweeter than that overtime march to become back-to-back champions. It's admittedly funny how things work out though. Instead of McKinnon becoming the hero, Hardman gets a monument and is back with the team as a legend.
Nonetheless, McKinnon will always be remembered regardless, as will everyone else on all of these Super Bowl teams. Mahomes is the orchestrator of the glory and Reid's admission is just the latest example proving it.
