Justin Reid Couldn't Be More Excited About His New Role
By Cem Yolbulan
The Kansas City Chiefs are using organized team activities (OTAs) to find ways to improve their back-to-back Super Bowl-winning team. One of the areas every team in the league is trying to figure out this offseason is kick return. After the NFL implemented new kickoff rules that should increase the importance of returns, the Chiefs have been thinking about experimenting on their special teams.
On Thursday, the Chiefs' special teams coordinator Dave Toub addressed the potential changes that they are considering. One of those involves using safety Justin Reid as the kickoff specialist instead of team kicker Harrison Butker.
This outside-the-box approach to kickoff returns already has Reid excited. The 27-year-old reacted to this news with a social media post that couldn't contain his excitement.
Chiefs News: Justin Reid Can't Wait for His New Role
Reid took to social media and shared a message saying that "this season is about to be so fun", including a devil emoji. This is understandable since it means that Reid will likely have a much larger role on the team next season. He will get to kick and tackle more, what more can an expert tackler who is also very adept at kicking want?
The reason for this change is the fact that kickers are now expected to tackle more often. Toub said that in the XFL, where these kickoff rules were taken from, the kickers make tackles 25 to 40 percent of the time. Having Butker do that is obviously not the optimal solution. Having hard-hitting Reid do it is a much better option.
Reid has already occasionally kicked for the Chiefs, both for extra points and kickoffs. At the same time, he played over 97% of defensive snaps ever since he arrived in Kansas City two years ago.
Whether this increased special teams role means that his defensive role needs to be reduced remains to be seen but there is no denying that Reid is counting down the days before the start of the season.
