Chiefs Make Shocking Cut Right After Week 2 Win
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs make a surprising cut on Monday, waiving TE Peyton Hendershot following a Week 2 win over the Bengals.
Hendershot became popular among the fans after defending Patrick Mahomes against the Ravens in Week 1, and his release is a stunner considering Kansas City already likely gained a roster spot after Isiah Pacheco's concerning injury.
It looks like Kareem Hunt could be coming back, though that leaves space for one more move ahead of a Week 3 showdown with the Falcons.
Chiefs Release TE Peyton Hendershot After Week 2 Win
Signing Hendershot in the first place was unexpected. The Chiefs already have Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, and fourth-round rookie Jared Wiley, so there wasn't much space for Hendershot to make an impact.
Even still, getting rid of him likely indicates another move is coming quickly. Alternatively, it could mean that Pacheco won't be placed on the injured reserve list, though that feels unlikely given the reports he'll be out for up to eight weeks.
There's something up here and we'll know more soon. For now, fans are left to speculate about who could be signed. Considering the repeated ailments on both sides of the ball, perhaps Kansas City hopes to sign a defender to bolster that group.
Hendershot's time with the Chiefs was short, but he still made an impact as a fierce teammate willing to protect his QB. He'll be a priority add for teams in need of a tight end with blocking chops, though Kansas City obviously never had that need.
