The Kansas City Chiefs have worked hard at getting the band back together this offseason. With Patrick Mahomes restructuring his contract, the Chiefs have opened up enough cap space to re-sign several key free agents with another name joining the list of re-signees on Thursday.

Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz took to X (formerly Twitter) to report that pass rusher Tershawn Wharton has re-signed with the Chiefs on a one-year, $2.75 million contract. Schultz also reports that the deal is fully guaranteed.

Chiefs News: Kansas City Re-Signs Tershawn Wharton

Chiefs fans are thrilled to see Wharton re-signed following a solid campaign. The 25-year-old defender managed to bounce back after tearing his ACL just five games into the 2022 season. He finished his fourth year in the league with 13 solo tackles, a pair of sacks, and one fumble recovery.

Pro Football Focus also gave Wharton a career-high pass rush grade of 68.1 after he amassed 13 hurries and a pair of quarterback hits to go along with his two sacks. Considering how he only turns 26 in June, the former Missouri S&T product might only get better as time goes on.

Wharton is the latest Chiefs defender to re-sign after the likes of Chris Jones, Drue Traquill, and Mike Pennel all re-upped with the franchise over the last week. Cornerback L'Jarius Sneed was also franchise-tagged before free agency opened, however, the jury is still out regarding whether he'll be traded or not this offseason.

Defensive end Michael Danna is the last key defender that the Chiefs can still re-sign. Spotrac lists them as having $16.2 million in space, which is more than enough to convince him to stay if he's willing.

Nevertheless, Kansas City had one of the best defenses in the league in 2023 and it'll likely stay that way after this week's re-signing frenzy.

Time will tell if running it back with last year's defensive core will pay off next February. When it comes to a potential three-peat, the Chiefs own the second-best Super Bowl LIX odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
