Chiefs safety Justin Reid is still missing training camp due to injury and could miss some regular season games, throwing a curveball into both Kansas City's defensive and special teams plans.

The team still has to figure out who would handle kickoffs in Reid's absence, but there is still one free-agent safety available who would provide perfect insurance for the Chiefs' vocal leader in the secondary.

Four-time All-Pro and former Denver Bronco Justin Simmons somehow hasn't been signed yet, and perhaps no team is a better fit than his former rival.

Justin Simmons is the Perfect Justin Reid Insurance in Free Agency

Simmons has long been regarded as one of the best safeties in the league. He's got 64 pass deflections and 30 interceptions in his career and the Chiefs are intimately familiar with him given he's played the last eight years in Denver.

Kansas City is comfortable with Bryan Cook, Chamarri Conner, Nazeeh Johnson, and the rest of the secondary, but there's no denying that Simmons would raise the ceiling. This isn't the first time a Simmons-Chiefs marriage has been encouraged, and I'd imagine the veteran would flourish on a true contender.

The Broncos have been noncompetitive for virtually Simmons' whole career. It's unclear what his asking price is, but a one-year deal in Kansas City to rebuild his value could be ideal for both parties.

He's 30 years old, adding some risk to a one-year deal, though it's hard to place a true dollar value on the pursuit of a championship. Simmons may command more money or years elsewhere, yet no team could offer a more realistic path to a ring.

Perhaps Reid's injury is less of a concern than the coaching staff let on. If that's the case, Simmons would be a luxury and not a necessity. If the team believes Reid could actually miss early games against the Ravens or Bengals? Then Brett Veach needs to at least make the phone call to Simmons' representatives.
