Chiefs Veteran's Injury "More Serious" Than Initially Thought
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs have a worrisome issue developing after the first couple of days at training camp, as veteran safety Justin Reid hasn't practiced due to a surprise injury.
While concern was minimal after the first day, a recent report from Jason Anderson of Sports Radio 810 in Kansas City suggests the injury is more severe than initially thought. In fact, Anderson was told Reid could miss the entire preseason and possibly even some of the regular season.
Considering Reid is stepping into a larger role as the team's kickoff man on top of serving as the most experienced player in the secondary, his potential loss looms large.
Chiefs News: Justin Reid's Injury "More Severe" Than Expected
Reid has been remarkably consistent and durable in his two years with the organization, helping set the tone defensively with tough, physical play and a keen understanding of Steve Spagnuolo's defense.
With 178 tackles, 14 deflected passes, four sacks, and an interception over those two seasons, Reid is obviously an important player to keep healthy. After trading away L'Jarius Sneed in the offseason, the Chiefs need guys like Reid to step up and mentor the younger guys in the secondary.
It's tough enough to potentially lose Reid for camp and the preseason, but not having him against the Ravens in Week 1 or Bengals in Week 2 could prove costly. On the flip side, his absence does give someone like Chamarri Conner, Nazeeh Johnson, or Bryan Cook more opportunities to grow into a leader.
This is the final year on Reid's contract, and he hopes to show he's deserving of an extension. His versatility as a kicker gives him extra value, though the injury will be something to monitor moving forward.
The Chiefs hope Reid's injury is minor, yet this report is still concerning. As the team tries to win a historic third consecutive Lombardi Trophy, injuries feel like one of the only things that can derail them. Reid's value is clear, and his status is a storyline worth watching closely over the next few weeks.
