The Chiefs should have one of the NFL's best secondaries once again despite losing L'Jarius Sneed, though one former All-Pro safety is still available in free agency.

Longtime Broncos star Justin Simmons still isn't on a roster and Mike Kabusha of Last Word on Sports called the Chiefs one of the teams that make the most sense to sign the four-time All-Pro.

Justin Reid, Bryan Cook, Chamarri Conner, and Jaden Hicks give Kansas City a strong safety room, though Simmons' inclusion could put the group over the top as the team goes for a three-peat.

Former Broncos All-Pro S Justin Simmons 'Makes Sense' for Chiefs

Simmons has been a Second-Team All-Pro in four of the last five seasons, notching 70 tackles and three interceptions this year after leading the league with six interceptions in 2022. The Chiefs only had eight interceptions last season, tied for the third-fewest in the NFL.

A ball-hawk like Simmons would immediately help matters. As Kabusha writes, "Of all the teams to try and net Simmons, who has a better pitch than Kansas City?...The Chiefs have plenty of cap space, are early favorites for the Super Bowl, and have some guy named Patrick Mahomes on the roster. If Simmons is a mercenary hunting for a playoff-bound team, the Chiefs should be option number one."

From 2020-2022, Simmons had at least five interceptions in all three seasons. Signing him after all those years with the Broncos would have its own moral benefit, kicking a rival while they're down.

There aren't many free agents still available that I'd be interested in the Chiefs pursuing. Simmons is one of the few. Still only 30 years old, a short-term contract could benefit both parties and ensure Kansas City's defense stays elite.
