Chiefs Cut Candidate Returns to Field on Monday After Worrisome Injury
By Joe Summers
Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney returned to the practice field on Monday after missing several days with an ankle injury sustained on Wednesday.
He's one of several important players back in action after a slew of injuries last week, and Toney's status looms large over the rest of the roster. The fifth-year player is in the midst of a difficult position battle. Toney needs to be on the field to make the final 53-man group, so today's news is big for his chances.
With Toney and Justin Watson back in the fold, Kansas City will have a full look at its wide receivers this week.
Chiefs News: WR Kadarius Toney Returns to Practice
The coaching staff's actions seem to indicate Toney is in line to make the team. They've talked highly of him and worked him out as a running back on top of his receiver and special teams duties, showcasing the kind of versatility Andy Reid values so highly.
However, Toney faces stiff competition from the other players. Nikko Remigio has been tremendous this summer and even Justyn Ross enjoyed an excellent week of practice in Toney's absence. There are only so many spots to go around and at least one quality player will almost certainly be cut. Perhaps two.
Rashee Rice's potential suspension looks more likely to come in 2025 by the day, while Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, Justin Watson and presumably Mecole Hardman all join Rice as theoretical roster locks. That means Toney is fighting for one of the last two spots in the group assuming the Chiefs keep seven players, though that part isn't certain yet.
Nonetheless, it's great to see Toney back on the field. He's established a well-earned reputation as injury-prone. Staying healthy for the rest of training camp and preseason would go a long way toward proving he's a player the organization can rely on moving forward.
