3 Offseason Moves That Could Backfire on Chiefs

Even though the Kansas City Chiefs' offseason has been promising thus far, everything working out is far from guaranteed. Here are three moves that could backfire for the Chiefs next season.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been hard at work this offseason as they prepare for another Super Bowl run next year. Winning three titles in a row has never been done before, hence why general manager Brett Veach has done everything in his power to upgrade the roster, which includes releasing some players while also bringing in new faces via free agency.

But as promising as the Chiefs' offseason moves have been, there isn't a guarantee that everything will work out. The NFL can be an unpredictable beast and history has proven that offseason decisions don't always wind up yielding looking as good on the gridiron as they did on paper.

With that in mind, here are three offseason moves that could backfire on the Chiefs.

1. Trading CB L'Jarius Sneed

After the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII, one of the biggest stories surrounding the team was L'Jarius Sneed's status. The elite cornerback and franchise couldn't come to terms on a long-term deal, resulting in Sneed being traded to the Tennessee Titans, with whom he signed a four-year, $76.4 million contract.

While it's nice knowing that the contract situation won't be a distraction in Kansas City, losing a player of Sneed's caliber is never easy. The Chiefs had one of the best defenses in the NFL last season and his efforts played a big role in that success.

According to Pro Football Focus, Sneed was targeted 81 times last season but only allowed 42 receptions for 406 yards without a touchdown and a 55.9 passer rating.

So yeah, it's easy to see why the Chiefs' defense might be lacking without the former Louisiana Tech Bulldog. Fellow CB Trent McDuffie is coming off a first-team All-Pro performance, but he could see tougher matchups now that Sneed isn't blanketing No. 1 wideouts. Joshua Williams and Jaylen Watson are solid, too, but both men were only drafted in 2022 and don't have a ton of experience.

If Kansas City's CB room steps up, Sneed's absence won't be felt nearly as much. However, if the group falters, the Chiefs might end up regretting the trade.
