Peter King's bold proclamation on Patrick Mahomes' legacy just feels right

It's impossible to put into words what Patrick Mahomes has meant to the Kansas City Chiefs franchise, the NFL, and to a fanbase that for so long had been struggling to find any hope that one day we could talk in reverence about the team that we loved so much for so long.

In eight full years starting, Mahomes has amassed five trips to the Super Bowl, three Lombardi trophies, the first back-to-back title wins in two decades, and two MVP awards, as well as being a six-time Pro Bowler and a two-time first-team All-Pro. Not to mention his individual statistical accolades, which at this point are pacing for him to finish in the top three all time in passing yards and touchdowns.

He's had an outlandishly large impact on turning the Chiefs into not just a great team, but a dynastic team. He's made it so that when the story of the NFL is being told, you cannot tell it true without mentioning the Chiefs' dominance over now a 10-year period and running.

While there are still doubters and haters galore, the people who truly know football accept that Mahomes, at this point in his career, has very few competitors at his position. Not in the league, mind you, but all-time. He has clearly been at the top of the totem pole amongst his current peers. Mahomes is now chasing the ghosts of guys like Tom Brady and Joe Montana.

Peter King, the legendary Sports Illustrated NFL writer and historian, is an example of someone who understands the greatness of Mahomes and made quite the statement when discussing the quarterback's legacy.

I'll say it right here and right now. Tom Brady is the GOAT. That's not a bold statement, but rather inarguable for what he did during his 20-plus-year career. Brady won an incomprehensible seven Super Bowls, made it to the big game 10 times, was the QB who led the Patriots to back-to-back titles in the early 2000s, made 15 Pro Bowls, and was a three-time MVP. Brady also holds both all-time records in passing yards and touchdowns and made the All-Decade Hall of Fame teams twice for the 2000s and 2010s.

But I will say this. For King to make that statement, with all the knowledge he has accrued during his time around the league, you've got to take his opinion seriously. Mahomes, if we are just talking about who you would want for one game or one season in their prime, is a legit option. He just might be the best option.

While the Chiefs signal-caller continues to build his own GOAT-like resume, to call him the BOAT (best of all time) is not a stretch at all. And it has everything to do with what King said and how he explained it. Mahomes is easily more talented than Brady. He is more athletic, can scramble outside the pocket, throw off multiple platforms, change his arm angles - all of it.

What made Brady special was the mental side of his game. He'd beat opposing defenses before the play even happened. And while Mahomes is the best QB ever post-snap, Brady holds the crown for the best pre-snap. What King argues, and what I would agree with him on, is that Mahomes, now a decade into the league, accruing the knowledge he has, is closer to Brady's pre-snap IQ than Brady is to Mahomes post-snap playmaking.

Look, at the end of the day, this is all opinion, but it's based on facts and what we know has happened. It can be a fun discussion when had in good faith, which is what sports is all about. Even for Mahomes to be in the conversation with someone like Brady just a decade into his own career, is what Chiefs fans never dreamed of and will cease to forget for the rest of our lives.
