Chiefs Suddenly Have New Competition on WR Trade Market as Deadline Nears
There was a fair amount of hype around the Kansas City Chiefs' wide receiver room heading into the 2024 NFL season. Rashee Rice looked terrific in his first year, Xavier Worthy was one of the most promising rookie wideouts, and the team had just added former 1,000-yard receiver Marquise Brown through free agency.
Fast forward to Week 8 when both Rice and Brown are on injured reserve while the Chiefs just lost JuJu Smith-Schuster for the foreseeable future. In other words, it won't be surprising if general manager Brett Veach scours the trade market for some wideout help ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline.
Although the Chiefs certainly have the assets to add a WR or two in the coming weeks, their competition for help became stiffer following Monday night's NFL games.
Chiefs News: Buccaneers Could Compete in WR Trade Market
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in dire need of wide receiver help following their 41-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7. Mike Evans exited the game with a hamstring injury before halftime and didn't return while Chris Godwin's campaign is over after completing dislocating his left ankle with less than a minute remaining in the game.
Without their top playmakers, the Buccaneers are officially desperate for WR help. While most teams might write off their season following devastating injuries, Tampa Bay still has a reason to compete given that Todd Bowles' squad is still tied with the Atlanta Falcons atop the NFC South.
The Chiefs must step up their wideout search now that Buccaneers are likely entering the WR trade market. Top names like Davante Adams and Amari Cooper are already off the board, and more prominent names will likely find new homes the closer the deadline gets.
Names like Carolina Panthers WRs Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen have both been connected to the Chiefs, as has ex-Kansas City wideout Demarcus Robinson. Having said that, landing any of those names (or anyone else) could prove to be tougher following the Buccaneers' unfortunate news.
Another thing that could make life more difficult for the Chiefs is that the Buccaneers' draft capital is more valuable. Although GM Veach has plenty of draft picks to play around with, Tampa Bay's worse record means their selections will occur earlier in the draft.
The 2024 NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday, Nov. 5, giving Veach & Co. two weeks to address the worsening WR situation. The Chiefs could use all the help they can get if they want to cash in on their NFL-best +450 odds to win Super Bowl LIX on FanDuel Sportsbook.
