Chiefs News: Will Patrick Mahomes play in the AFC Championship Game?
The biggest story in Chiefs news is the status of Patrick Mahomes heading into the AFC Championship Game.
Fans never want to see their quarterback take a shot during any game, but Patrick Mahomes getting hit hard in the divisional game against the Browns and exiting the game was terrifying for Kansas City Chiefs fans. Mahomes jogged off the field and did not re-enter the game.
Fortunately, Chad Henne stepped in and despite some struggles, he did enough to get his team the win and help ensure a third straight AFC Championship game appearance. Henne was clutch when he needed to be, but there’s no debating that Chiefs fans want Mahomes out there on Sunday if he’s healthy and able to go.
The question now though is, will Mahomes be healthy enough to play on Sunday?

We likely won’t know Mahomes’ status until later in the week, but the Chiefs shouldn’t throw him out there unless he’s 100%. He’s the franchise quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs and while yes, the AFC Championship Game is about as big as the stage gets, the Chiefs won a Super Bowl last year and shouldn’t risk the health of Mahomes to get another one.
It’s not up to Mahomes to decide if he’s healthy enough to play or not. If he’s cleared by doctors to play, then cool. If not, then that’s the correct decision and will at least mean that he’s healthier heading into the 2021 season.
It’s no secret that Chiefs Kingdom would rather have Mahomes out there than Henne, but head injuries are no joke and have led to several young NFL players opting for retirement before they even hit 30. Mahomes is just 25 years old and it’d be terrible if he made a similar decision because he was rushed on the field and things got worse.
Even if Mahomes is cleared to play, his toe was clearly bothering him before he got knocked out of the game so that’s another storyline to keep an eye on heading into the AFC Championship Game.
