Mizzou football can’t get out of its own way and that was proven, once again, as the Tigers fell to the then 1-5 Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville by a score of 21-14. It was an ugly loss, to say the least.

The SEC East title could have been right there for the taking for the Missouri Tigers, but of course, as usual, Mizzou couldn’t get out of their own way.

After going on a five-game winning streak, the Tigers were in great position to win their first conference title since 2014. They had a favorable match-up this weekend in Nashville against the 1-5 Vanderbilt Commodores and considering Missouri already had their “Mizzou loss” of the season in week one to Wyoming, it didn’t feel like another one of those was going to occur.

Well, we were all wrong for thinking that. Dead wrong.

MU never had life in this game. From the beginning, Vanderbilt looked more hungry and determined to win the football game and it looked like the Tigers wanted no part in playing in Nashville.

With the loss, Missouri’s road to an SEC East title hasn’t completely vanished, but it’ll be a much tougher feat now. They still have to play both Florida and Georgia, with the Georgia game coming on the road, so now they HAVE to win both of those games if they want any chance at playing for the title.

Georgia and Florida both have tough games on their schedules still, but let’s just say it – Mizzou blew their chances at a conference title because they couldn’t get out of their own way. They were penalized 12 times for 120 yards and also missed three field goals.

It was an ugly, ugly outing for the black and gold and now the Tigers will likely have to settle with a decent bowl game down the stretch. That’s assuming, of course, that they don’t end up hearing bad news regarding their appeal.

While the Tigers have improved under Barry Odom during his tenure as the Mizzou football head coach, this was another frustrating loss under his leadership. Mizzou has been competitive with Odom, but it’s become evident that they’ll always be around an 8-4 or 7-5 team. If fans are fine with that every year, then so be it, but the talent on this team should result in more than just an average bowl game.

The loss to Vanderbilt was frustrating for MU fans, but by this point, they’re used to it. It’s just a shame that the road to an SEC East title is a lot more difficult now for the Tigers.
