Kansas football might have gotten dismantled by the sixth ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, but how about Pooka Williams? The Jayhawks running back is a superstar!

Kansas football typically doesn’t have a lot going for it (though perhaps that could be changing with the soon-to-be hire of Les Miles), but this year they have a superstar in the making. That superstar’s name is Pooka Williams.

Williams showed up big time on Saturday night in Norman for all of the nation to see. The KU running back carried the rock 15 times for 252 yards and two touchdowns. You read that right. 252 yards.

Williams also threw for a touchdown (again… You read that right) and caught three passes for 18 yards. The freshman running back has been a sensational player all season long and finally gives KU a dynamic weapon on offense.

It hasn’t been great for the football program over the years, but things appear to be heading in a much better direction. If Les Miles does indeed come to Lawrence (which it sure sounds like that’s the plan), that right there is a huge boost for a program that has been in the dumps for well over a decade now.

Pooka Williams is another positive surrounding the program. Had he suited up for the season opener against Nicholls State, KU probably wins that game and the Jayhawks are likely sitting on the year with four wins rather than three. Would that have been enough to keep David Beaty on the sidelines past 2018?

Watching Williams is a ton of fun. He had several plays where the Sooner defenders thought they had him taken care of, but Williams would keep churning the legs and add another few yards on the play. KU hasn’t had a player like him in a long time and it’s such a refreshing thing.

Kansas has one more game this season in what will be Beaty’s final game as the Jayhawks head coach. The game will be in Lawrence against the Texas Longhorns, a team that KU shockingly knocked off two years ago. Somehow I don’t see that same result taking place this year, as the Longhorns are a totally different team now.

In this final game, hopefully the Jayhawks give Pooka Williams as many chances as possible to turn on the jets and take the ball to the house. That’s the only way KU has a shot in this one.

Even with yet another bad year for Kansas football, having a superstar in the making on the offense is definitely something to celebrate.
