Nebraska football finally got to put a checkmark in the win column after knocking off Minnesota 53-28 for the first ever win of the Scott Frost era

Well Husker fans, we waited a long time for this, but it happened! The Nebraska Cornhuskers won their first game of the Scott Frost era and now we can all exhale a bit. Sure, a 1-6 record isn’t anything to celebrate, but getting that first victory is a huge weight off these guys’ shoulders.

With the first win of Frost’s Cornhusker coaching tenure in the books, this could be the start of something great for Nebraska. Next week they get an MEAC opponent in Lincoln, who will probably still be partying from this victory.

While I hate to speculate after how the first six games of the season went, the Huskers should win that game against Bethune-Cookman next weekend. All of a sudden, Nebraska is 2-6 and on what we like to call a winning streak. Winning one game is great, but imagine the boost for these players and fans if Nebraska can double their win total.

Sometimes all it takes is getting that first win and then things start to come together a little more. Husker fans have seen great things from this team at times (the first half of this game for instance), but they either hadn’t been able to hold onto leads or things kind of just bounced in the opposite direction.

Adrian Martinez has been sensational over the last few weeks and was tremendous again on Saturday. The true freshman quarterback went 25 of 29 for 276 yards and three touchdowns while adding another 125 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown off 15 carries. Did I mention he’s only a freshman?

Devine Ozigbo was also phenomenal as usual, rushing for 152 yards and two touchdowns off of 12 carries. As long as the Huskers continue to feed Ozigbo, the Huskers should be able to stay in tight games throughout the rest of the season.

Freshman Maurice Washington had a good game too, rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown off of 14 carries. The Huskers really took it to the Gophers on the ground and totaled 383 rushing yards on the day.

The defense might have been shaky in the second half, but they were as solid as a defense could be in the first half. They nearly went the entire half without allowing Minnesota to score and held the Gophers to converting just five out of 14 times on third down. That’s the kind of production you want to see from a young defense.

I had been telling people all season that Nebraska wasn’t as bad as their 0-6 record would indicate and this game is proof of that. Minnesota isn’t a bad team. They were 3-3 coming into this one and have always played the Cornhuskers tough. Nebraska beat them handily though, which shows they weren’t as bad as a normal 0-6 team.

To sum up, there’s a lot to be optimistic about with Nebraska football moving forward. Will the Cornhuskers make a bowl game? No, not likely, as they’d have to win out and with games against Ohio State, Michigan State, and Iowa still on the schedule, that isn’t happening. This season is all about growing from mistakes made though.

Hopefully this win is the start of something great for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The players, coaches, and fans all deserve that after how rough the start of the year was.

Congrats to Scott Frost for getting in the win column and we all know a ton of wins are on the horizon for Big Red.
