Kansas City Chiefs: 3 most intriguing things to watch at Training Camp
By Chris Taylor
No matter who it is, there will be a new free safety for the Chiefs
The guys over at ourlads.com currently have four guys at that position. Any of the four could come away with the starting gig. There is also a chance that spot is filled by someone else in the secondary as well.
Armani Watts would be my favorite to win the job, but in all fairness, he has yet to practice in full pads. Drafted in the fourth round of this years draft, the rookie safety has all the tangibles to be a playmaker at this level. At least that is what his college tape says about him.
Leon McQuay III can play both safety positions, which might keep him on the squad no matter who gets the starting free safety gig. The sixth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2017 started the last game of the season, the first game of his NFL career. He finished that game with three tackles and a pass deflection.

The old man of the group is Robert Golden. He comes over from Pittsburgh, where he spent his entire career so far. In six seasons he has started 12 games, so he isn’t what you would call a shoe-in, but he definitely has more experience than the other candidates.
Jordan Sterns is the big question mark of the group. Now in his second year, the former Oklahoma State Cowboy will be looking to make strides in camp this season. Sterns has plenty of upside without the NFL body. If Sterns has a good camp, he could sneak onto the roster, which will probably mean one of these guys are going to be packing their bags soon.
Eric Murray has a chance to slide over to the free safety spot as well. He’s made quite a few young mistakes on the field, but he definitely stays active while out there. He has a good sense of where the ball is but gets beat by quicker, stronger receivers. This caused plenty of flags to be thrown his way.
