Kansas Basketball: Get to know potential opponents in round of 64
By Chris Taylor
Get to know Penn
The Penn Quakers: 24-8 (12-2)
Head Coach: Steve Donahue
How they got here: Winners of the Ivy League tournament
The Quakers are a feisty team, which is somewhat cliché to say of a 16 seed. The fact that they are a sixteen seed is something in itself. Penn may just be the best 16 seed in history. Although Penn is ranked 115th in RPI, they do have some interesting quirks about them.
Most notably their three-point field goal defense. They rank atop the leaderboard in that category, which can only help them against a three-point shooting team like Kansas. The issue here is that they haven’t played but one quality opponent compared to the Jayhawks, and that was Villanova back in November. They lost that game 90-62.

- #25 A.J. Brodeur F 6′-8″
- #2 Antonio Woods G 6′-1″
- #4 Darnell Foreman G 6′-1″
- #21 Ryan Betley G 6′-5″
Betley averages 14 points per game, Brodeur adds 13 points and seven rebounds per game. The scoring is spread out through the roster. Although they don’t have the talent that Kansas has, of course, they do have kids that know how to play.
Look for the big men of Kansas to have a good game here. Natural selection should take place when the Jayhawks are able to score inside, leaving sharpshooters such as Devonte’ Graham, Svi Mykhailiuk and Malik Newman open to do their thing.
This game has potential to be close at half, but the athleticism of the Jayhawks alone should cause issues for the Quakers.
