We’re still not sure just what the Kansas City Royals plans for the future are. However, the latest Royals rumors say Kelvin Herrera is available…for the right price.

The Kansas City Royals came to a deal with reliever Kelvin Herrera to avoid arbitration. However, the latest Royals rumors are now saying that KC is putting Herrera on the trade block. That doesn’t mean Kansas City will just let him go for peanuts though. According to Nick Cafardo, the Royals would expect a “huge haul” for him.

This seems to fall in line with a pretty confusing approach to the offseason this year. It seems that all of our Royals rumors alternate between the team looking to rebuild, or hoping to hold on to current talent. Those are conflicting approaches to this offseason, and some clarity will need to show up soon.

It would appear that Royals GM Dayton Moore is waiting for a definitive piece to fall before he goes all in on his plans. Whether that is re-signing a big free agent like Eric Hosmer, or landing a big trade for someone like Kelvin Herrera, I don’t know. However, Kansas City is clearly waiting on something.

What Is Kelvin Herrera Worth?

The fact that the Kansas City Royals expect a large return for Kelvin Herrera is a bit strange. There haven’t been many Royals rumors out there about Herrera’s marketplace. So it’s hard to see exactly where that demand might be coming from. There are also plenty of other relievers out there that teams could target.

One would also have to assume that Kelvin Herrera’s market has decreased a bit after this past season. Herrera was a hot commodity, often connected to the Washington Nationals, up until the trade deadline. However, his season as a whole was nothing spectacular.

It wouldn’t be too surprising if it turns out that Kelvin Herrera is worth more to the Royals than anyone else. Despite a slightly down year in 2017, Herrera is still a quality reliever and closing option. However, other teams may simply believe that he is not worth sacrificing some key prospects for.

The Rebuild That Just Won’t Start

Some of the Royals rumors out there suggest that the delay in the free agent market is helping KC out. However, if the Kansas City Royals don’t start making decisions soon, they will essentially be losing this offseason to inactivity. There is a lot of work to do in Kansas City, and it needs to begin soon.

More from Kansas City Royals

At this point, it is hard to justify any decision that doesn’t point towards the team rebuilding. Kansas City has already made it known that they are willing to deal just about anyone on the roster. It might be time to start coming through on that end of things. That may not net them the biggest possible returns, but it would show they are open for business.

Then again, it seems very possible that this team is waiting to see what happens with Eric Hosmer. The market for the star first baseman hasn’t been great, and that had kept the Royals in the mix. It might be time to cut bait on that, or at least push Hosmer to the back burner. Dayton Moore can’t hold up his offseason plans for one player.

Kansas City Royals fans are waiting as patiently as they can for something to happen this offseason. However, the Royals rumors we are getting are just all over the place. It’s nearly impossible to determine just what this team is planning to do. Something has got to give, and it needs to happen soon.
