The Kansas City Chiefs have taken back control of the AFC West and are in charge of their playoff destiny thanks to back to back wins against division rivals.

Not too long ago the mood in Chiefs Kingdom was borderline depressing. After a quick and impressive start, the Kansas City Chiefs took a nose dive in just about every statistical category, most importantly the win/loss category.

The offense became stagnant and the defense was defenseless. As the Chiefs hit bedrock, the narrative turned to firings and trades, benching and tirades.

When all hope for the 2017 season was about to fall through the winter ice, the Chiefs found their fire. A series of events led to the rejuvenation of the offense and the defense awakening from a deep slumber.

Head coach Andy Reid handed over the offensive play calling to offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. The offensive line started blocking on all fronts. Kareem Hunt started running through holes and making people miss just like he did at the beginning year. Kansas City’s defense started to play exactly like fans thought they would, or should, all season. And I started writing more positive pieces.

After seemingly having an untouchable advantage in the division, Kansas City found themselves tied for the AFC West lead with both the Raiders and Chargers. That was two weeks ago. First, they conquered the Oakland Raiders, then defeated the Chargers like the Chiefs always do. With one very large stone they killed two very fierce birds. The Chiefs are in line to win their second straight division title

How they’ve done it

The impressive thing isn’t that they won, but how they won those games. Kareem Hunt has rushed for 271 yards combined in the last two games. He gained over 200 total yards of scrimmage against the Chargers alone. The second coming of Hunt has come at the right time for Kansas City. He brings the balance that is needed for this offense to strive.

Hunt definitely deserves the attention, however it’s the defense that has turned this all around for the Chiefs. Between Derek Carr and Philip Rivers, they have been picked off five times. After the emotional end to the game against the Jets, Marcus Peters picked up a late flag thrown by an official and chucked it into the stands before walking off the field.

Among other happenings, Peters was suspended for the Raiders game. The defense stepped up in his absence, keeping Carr and the Raiders locked down for three and a half quarters. This all but mathematically eliminating them from the playoffs.

In his return to the field, Peters hushed his haters for at least a weekend by dominating the defensive side of the field. Two interceptions and a forced fumble will definitely warrant forgiveness and remind those who have issues forget the things that bother them.

Chris Jones and the defensive line have stepped up as well. The defense as a whole has stepped up. They are able to put pressure on the quarterback, stop the run game in its tracks, and create turnovers which the offense has been able to turn into points.

If the Chiefs continue to ride this momentum into the playoffs, they will be that team at the start of the season who everyone figured to be a top Super Bowl contender. Once in the postseason only the type of football they are playing. At this very moment, the Kansas City Chiefs are red hot and ready to take up where they left off in week five, dominating the league in spectacular fashion.
